What happens to the deceased if the family is too poor to cover funeral expenses?

Under Family Category: Family Parenting

THank integrity this is not something my family is confronting only now. But suspect a defunct had no insurance/savings/estate as well as a flourishing family members could not compensate for any last arrangements. How is a genocide rubbed once a obligation is sealed by a coroner?

The county will bury an indigent person at the expense of the taxpayers. No ceremony. A plain box and a small paper marker. Such cemetaries were once called "potters field."

I believe the government steps in and they probably handle the proceedings however they want. but im not that sure.

The government actually takes care of the burial (at minimal costs, but still..).

the family of the deceased has no responsibility to pay,…..but most do,…..if the money is not there the county funds the cremation,…..

The family can still organize the funeral in the usual way. If the deceased left no money, there is a fixed amount that the government recognizes as a fair cost of a funeral. The family may choose to supplement this amount to get a better coffin, etc. If the deceased left some funds, the equivalent amount is subtracted from the amount of public assistance.
Let say the government limit is $2000, the funeral expenses ran into $2100 and there were $100 left in the deceased bank account. The family would inherit $100, would submit a claim for reimbursement of $1900, and would have to take care of the remaining expenses.

I believe usually, the body will eventually be creamated, then the contents will be held in the small cardboard box (sorry..) somewhere. It will cost to have the ashes inturned at a cemetary niche , BUT it shouldn’t cost much to get the box yourself (or whoever) , and you can scatter the ashes in a place designated by the deceased, and that won’t cost anything. Also , if the deceased was prior military, i belive the government pays up to $250 (maybe more) but i don’t know what that covers. My father-in law was retired military and he had the full deal , and is buried at the military cemetary in San Antonio. My brother-in law was in the army for only 3 yrs , and they paid for his cremation, but not burial or inturnment – we still have the small box of ashes in our house , not sure what to do with yet…

what happens if a person is mean and nuts, and no one wants to spend their money to bury the person,When the person had the money, but said they would give it away before ,or spend it on gold rings, before they would leave anything. This person is 90 years old, and was always mean, and beat her kids.
