Was it possible for a family from Russia to immigrate to the US during the 1980s?
Under Family Category: Family Parenting
I wish to write a reduced story about a family (2 relatives as well as 1 child) who have been Russian as well as live in Russia, as well as leave a country to America from Russia. The story is set in a mid-late 1980s.
Would it be probable for a family to do this, as well as if so, how? Would they have to do it illegally?
Any answers appreciated, a some-more info a better.
Thanks!

Yes, but it was very, very difficult. They would need an exit visa and often the Communist Party would calculate the cost of their education in the USSR and demand payment of an enormous sum of money to get the exit stamp. If they had a wealthy sponsor in the West they could buy their way out.
You can Google search for a group referred to as "Refuseniks." They were Russian Jews who made themselves a pain in the Soviet’s *** during the 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s. The Israelis ransomed many of them out of the USSR.
