Next time you hear yourself saying, “Don’t be cute with me young lady,” just remember her cuteness is not of her making, it’s yours. She didn’t ask to perform all the songs from The Sound of Music at your most recent dinner party.
Also, forget the stranger danger lecture having credibility if you then force your children to hug goodnight each of the eight people they’ve never met before who are sitting at the dinner table.
And if you want to spend two hours on your hands and knees fumbling in between the legs of patrons, take your toddler to the movies. If such a thought sends you scarlet, then get a video, or a babysitter. There’s no way they are going to sit still for that amount of time.
The park is one of the best places to exercise lessons in etiquette. A simple request for permission from the owner of the bike your child has just commandeered is so much easier than pretending not to see what is happening, then worrying for the rest of the afternoon that they think you’re a bad parent.
Buchanan says showing consideration for others leads to a clear conscience, good fortune and high self-esteem. Understanding the universal importance of charm and good manners “is the key to happiness”.
What more could a parent want for their child, especially in public?
