At first I was absolutely shocked as I read the news. DT has been my favourite band (still is) and he has been my all-time favourite drummer (still is, too). BUT: In my opinion recent DT albums had become a bit stale. So DT with a new drummer (and therefore probably a different style in the rhythmsection) could be THE kickstart for a new DT era artisticalwise. Nope, DT certainly wont be the same ever again…but that doesnt mean it wont be great again!!!

@DrThumper1990 Of course they won’t be the same, but doesn’t mean they can’t come up with good music with a different drummer. Who knows they may have another creative spark with a different drummer.

Batteur depuis l’age de 12 ans et j’en ai 52, Mike est pour moi le batteur ayant une indépendance totale de ses 4 membres avec un niveau technique énorme, il est pour moi le meilleur batteur que j’ai entendu et le plus impressionnant de tous, c’est un régal de décortiquer chaque passage de ce clip et de ce rendre compte au fil des mesures de la difficulté de son travail, vraiment en toute sincérité un très grand bravo à lui.

I’m still in shock from Mike leaving… I just found out last night. Dream Theater will not be the same without him. He is ridiculously dynamic, BUT…

That said, how can you say that DT will lack an artistic edge??? Have you forgotten that JORDAN RUDESS, JOHN PETRUCCI, and JOHN MYUNG are still in the band??? You could make a case for each of those guys being the best at his instrument in the WORLD. Of COURSE Mike will be missed, but it isn’t like they are up the creek without a paddle.

You cant have Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy! There are many many many good drummers out there with just as much skill as him but no one will ever be able to fill his shoes. Ill agree with Dalios on this one Portnoy was the heart of DT and without him they wont be the same!

well this question is out of topic but, i made a comment and i got 51 thumbs up, i wonder why it isnt being showed there as a most voted comment, can someone help me with that?

I don’t believe he was happy about how things turned out and it seems that his decision to rest for a bit got in the way of the rest of the bands plans so… he was… removed from the project.

Personally, DT without Portnoy creats a very powerful image in my head: The symbol of DT without the Heart.
