What Makes Us Sneeze?
Under Family Category: Family Health
That familiar tickle in your nose may have started in a paddock of rye-grass a couple of hours’ drive away.
One hectare of rye-grass will release hundreds of kilos of microscopic pollen into the air over the season.
Grasses rely on the wind to distribute their pollen. The pollen is more concentrated at its source, but it also travels over long distances.
The most common springtime allergy source in Australia are pollen from grasses, weeds and trees.
The major culprits among the grasses are rye-grass, couch and Kentucky blue. The worst tree offenders are cypress pine as well as silver birch, maple, olive, poplar, ash, and oak, and the main weed is plantain.
