Can’t smell the flowers for the streaming nose? Try these natural tips for stemming the flow.
Dealing with the sneezes, itches, sniffles and sinus and hay fever headaches doesn’t have to mean heading straight for an over-the-counter product. There are things you can do and herbs you can take to ease the springtime miseries.
Nutritionist and herbalist Kathryn Elliott says many people suffer from sinusitis and hay fever, but often ignore the symptoms.
“They are very common conditions. Many people will come in to see me for something else and say, `Oh and plus I’ve got sinus problems’,” the Sydney therapist says.
“It is something people tend to live with and put up with for quite a long time – yet it’s something that can have a profound effect on their lives with the headaches and streaming nose.”
The key things in tackling hay fever and sinusitis are identifying allergy triggers, considering your diet and using herbs and vitamins to stem mucus flow. As hay fever and sinus attacks are both caused by an over-reactive immune response in the same part of the body, many of the treatments and approaches are similar.
Identify Triggers
Elliott says it’s essential to find out what’s sending your immune system into overdrive to produce hay fever and sinus symptoms. During springtime, pollens and flowering plants could set off hay fever attacks. Or, for those with sinus problems year round, dust mites, moulds or even food could be triggering allergic reactions.
An allergy test may identify not just plants and pollens but also possible food allergies or intolerances. Once identified, try to avoid the allergen by tackling dust mites, getting rid of suspect plants in your garden or avoiding the food in question.
