Food As Medicine
Boosting your fruit and vegetable intake ensures you’re getting lots of bioflavonoids, which act as anti - inflammatories. During hay fever and sinus attacks, the tissues inside your nose can become swollen. These bioflavonoids may help reduce the swelling, Elliott says.

Try to eat fish three times a week because of the omega-3 oils, which also have an anti-inflammatory action.
Cutting out alcohol is also a very good idea because drinking can result in the production of more mucus.

Eating hot foods, such as a chilli soup, has a great nose-cleansing action. It’s also important to drink lots of fluids as well, particularly hot teas. This helps to thin the mucus, making it easier for your body to get rid of it.

Herbs And Vitamins
As soon as you feel your head or nose becoming stuffed up, Elliott recommends taking a herbal product to help curb your mucus production.

There are lots of remedies available, but garlic and horseradish tablets are reliable favourites, and also fight infection. Products containing licorice and ginger are also good for clearing a stuffed-up head.

Two herbs Elliott often prescribes for people with sinus problems are eye bright and goldenrod. They fight infection, reduce inflammation and stem mucus production. These herbs aren’t commonly available and may need to be obtained from a herbalist.

Vitamins also help to strengthen your immune system, in particular vitamin C with bioflavonoids, especially the bioflavonoid quercetin.
“This is equivalent to a natural antihistamine. It may not be as fast-acting or as strong as ones you buy over the counter, but if you take it, it can reduce your body’s allergic response,” Elliott says.

If you don’t eat fresh fish, she suggests taking either an evening primrose oil or a fish oil supplement for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Another vitamin that may help is vitamin A, which can reduce inflammation of the mucous membranes. However, she warns pregnant women need to be very careful they get the right dose of this vitamin.

Other Things To Try
Buteyko breathing, a form of controlled breathing through your nose, may also help with sinusitis and hay fever. Saline sprays can provide relief, as can steam inhalations with a drop of eucalyptus.
