Continued From Up For Adoption Part 2

You’ll find specialist dog rescue groups for border collies, Dalmatians, Jack Russell terriers, Great Danes, German shepherds, cattle dogs and Tibetan spaniels.
For owners of more exotic pets, there are chicken and rabbit rescue groups, the Sydney Guinea Pig Rescue, the Ferret Welfare Society Inc and even Aussie Rodent Rescue (we recently had an infestation of Norwegian rats, but I’m afraid the thought of rescuing them didn’t occur to us).

It’s the more unusual pets, such as snakes, spiders and rats, that are less likely to be put up for adoption. The owners of these pets are generally enthusiasts and are in regular contact with a network of like-minded fans. The Unusual and Exotic Pets Group includes a number of vets around Australia happy to help.

The message is obvious. You should think carefully before getting any pet, whether it’s large or small. Every year the RSPCA receives more than 138,000 unwanted animals. These are mostly dogs and cats but can also include livestock and wild and native animals. Not all of these animals – and in the case of cats, far from all – will find new homes.

Today, I have a more cheerful menagerie: a rooster and six hens who are generally well behaved (although Claudette does have her moments), together with the ever-faithful Charlie Girl who now confines her chewing to stray footballs. I’m trying to ignore a recent hankering for a small herd of highland cattle.
