They can also include more practical things as opposed to the "killing time" kind of hobbies...if your good with wood, make things...they could be something small like a birdhouse, or something practical like furniture (entertainment center, coffee table) or even an outdoor picnic table. Possible even a play house or jungle gym if you have children. Mechanics may pick up an old car, motorcycle, or boat to restore. For someone more electronically inclined, repair old electronics.
