I Have 3-D Art in my H.S.
and we use
Clay (different types)
Dentist Tools (to carve and design)
Forks (To scratch and stick together pieces of clay with "slit")
Slit (watered down clay thats soft so it can be used as an adhesive)
Tile ( to not get dirty the desk)
Large Canvas (to not get dirty the desk)
Kiln (to harden the clay )
Glaze or Water Color (to paint…..for water color use clear clyric so it comes out shiny)
Paint Brushes (various sizes)

We also use newspaper because our projects can’t be completely solid….not more than a quarter thick..(1/2 inch i guess)

Our first project was a dog…

we made the body in an oval shape and wrapped it around newspaper, then
we added a head
we added characteristics (eyes, facial expressions, tails etc)
we smoothed it all out so it comes out nice with sponge thats barely wet…

then placed it in the kiln….

when it was out we painted it with water color and
clear clyric to give it shine..

you would need a kiln to provide the 2000 degrees of heat to harden the clay.

Go to pottery classes and they can teach you the basics. You can buy your own wheel and learn yourself. Some craft stores have special class things to learn to make different types of crafts, maybe there is a clay class!

You will need something to store it in to keep it in working mode.
and water to keep it moist.
glazes.

You can take a pottery class in most community colleges… that will get you started.

and yes a kiln but you can also go to pottery shops and rent time in a kiln to fire it.
