The Effects of Television Programs on Children’s Morality & Languange Developments
Under Family Category: Children Education,Children in Family
Nowadays educational programs for children are difficult to find, whereas they are really important for children. In an educational program, children can learn many valuable things, such as social, language, or even moral aspects. In other words, television has a major role in the children’s character development.
In the 1970’s, the ‘Tongky’ doll was popular among children and it was replaced by Ria Enes with her ‘Susan’ doll and Kak Seto with his ‘siKomo’ doll and and his other friends in the 1990s. After 2000, there was no more idol character for children in Indonesia . There were only programs addressed for adults. Now children have no choices. They are forced to watch adult programs which contain inappropriate materials for them like aggressive behaviors, abusive substances, sexual activities, and even bad languages. Meanwhile, television has a potential contribution to children’s behavior.
Children can learn negative things as well as positive things from TV. Violent television programs contribute to aggressive behaviors among children. For example, the ‘Smackdown’ show a few years ago. Children tried to practice the movements they saw from the wrestlers in the show. As a result, there were victims at home after the shows on TV. Therefore, a good program for children should be prepared, planned and nurtured by some consultants. According to Seto Mulyadi, children are the best imitators in the world. If they watch adult materials, their psychosexual developments will be damaged, and it may affect their sexual behaviors in the future. Regarding to this problem, parents have to stay with their children when they are watching TV so that they can choose appropriate programs for their children.
The chosen programs should be beneficial for children, such as the ‘Blue’s Clues’ program that is designed for children to solve their problems because in this program an animated dog named ‘Blue’ with his human friend, Steve, encourage viewers, particularly children to solve games and puzzles. Another example is the ‘Dora the Explorer’ program. In this show, children can imitate the Spanish words that are said by ‘Dora’. Actually, there are some famous programs that are addressed for children like ‘Naruto’, and ‘Idola Cilik’. Unfortunately, those programs seem unable to fulfill the criteria as ideal programs for children. For example, ‘Idola Cilik’ program is meant for children but the songs provided there are generally the songs for adults containing love themes, meanwhile, ‘Naruto’ is a cartoon program originated from Japan that contains violence.
The conclusion is that television does affect the children’s morality and language developments. To protect children from the bad effects of TV, parents have to monitor their children when they are watching TV and the writer also recommends the TV program makers to hire a team which consists of educators, psychologists, and also experts in religion. This team will monitor the processes of TV program making. The team will also collaborate with the Indonesian broadcasting commission “Komisi Penyiaran Indonesia ” (KPI) to decide whether one program is appropriate or not to broadcast in Indonesia.
