Did you know you’re more likely to contract chickenpox in early spring?
Chickenpox can be dangerous, often hospitalising young children, especially if they develop complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis.
Unborn babies are also at risk if a woman gets chickenpox during pregnancy.
Infectious diseases physician Dr Jenny Robson says although not government-funded, immunisation is recommended.
The vaccine cost about $65 a dose, and some people will experience side effects from it, such as a mild fever.
