Hay Fever? Kids Suffer, Too
Under Family Category: Children in Family, Family Health, Family Parenting
Typically we develop hay fever in adolescence through to adulthood, but young children can also suffer from hay fever. It can disrupt their sleep, affect their learning capacity and cause tiredness.
Associate Professor Mimi tang, an immunologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, says hay fever can have a significant impact on children’s lives and interfere with their schooling.
If your child suffer from allergy symptoms, and over-the-counter medications haven’t worked, Professor Tang suggests you should see your doctor.
She says nasal sprays containing corticosteroids that prevent inflammation in the nose are suitable for use by children over 12 years.
But she stresses that the sprays are designed for use as a preventer and need to be taken regularly, not just when a child is struck by the allergy.
Signs to look out for in your child include:
• Breathing through the mouth, bad breath, nasal-sounding speech and snoring.
• Runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose, and a cough.
• Rubbing the nose upwards and sideways to relieve itching.
• Trying to relieve throat itch with the tongue and making a clicking sound.
